Sport Fishing

After the First World War marine engine technology was such that wealthier people would buy a boat designed for the pleasure of sport fishing offshore. This hobby was greatly expanded after the 2nd World War and particularly in the 60’s with the invention of fiberglass, such that for instance, in Brielle we have a sport fishing fleet of privately owned boats in excess of 200 in number. These boats are generally high powered and attain speeds of close to 30 miles per hour and have a range of several 100 miles. Off the Jersey Coast it is very popular to speed out to the “Canyon” about a 25-mile run where the Continental Shelf drops precipitously into extremely deep water. The fishing is usually very good there for sailfish, marlin and other sport fish. Catches are brought back into Brielle and consumed by the fisherman and his friends. Sport fishing is the number 1 type of recreational boating in New Jersey.
